Ghana's rich history centres on the once-great Ashanti empire, which rose to power during the late seventeenth century. The Ashanti empire conquered most other tribal states and turned to controlling trade routes to the coast. The trade in gold, ivory, and slaves made the Ashanti, and later the Europeans, very rich. The Portuguese were the first of a long line of European powers to arrive in Ghana, then called 'the Gold Coast'. The British invaded in the 1870s, although warfare with the Ashanti lasted until the 1900s. In the 1920s and 1930s, a number of political parties formed dedicated to achieving independence from British Colonial rule, but it wasn't until 1951 that a general election was held. The election was won by Kwame Nkrumah who founded the Convention People's Party. In 1957 Ghana became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain its independence from European colonisers.. At present, there is a democratically-elected government, and Rawlings remains Chief of State, President, and head of the government. With a population of 19,894,014 and well endowed with natural resources, Ghana has twice the per capita output of the poorer countries in West Africa. Gold, timber, and cocoa production are major sources of foreign exchange. The domestic economy continues to revolve around subsistence agriculture, which accounts for 36% of GDP and employs 60% of the work force, mainly small landholders. Lake Volta is the world's largest artificial lake. indigenous beliefs 38%, Muslim 30%, Christian 24%, other 8% |
From Paul R. Williams, MD, International HealthCare Network SHALOM GHANA
Once again IHN teamed up with Paul Wilbur Ministries, this time for Shalom Ghana and saw forces of darkness pushed back in a significant way. The power of combining Worship Seminars and Concerts, Marketplace Seminars, and touching people at their point of physical and spiritual need through healthcare clinics made a life-changing impact! The Evangelism Team that joined the Medical Team to counsel and pray with patients was a dynamic group. In addition to the two evening worship concerts, two services were held on Sunday with over 3,000 people in attendance and a 300 Member Ghanaian Choir. We entered into an incredible high level of praise and worship.
Paul Cuny, a builder from Ponte Vedra, FL with Ed Dawkins from Jacksonville, led the Marketplace Seminar that touched the lives of many businessmen and women. Two businessmen came up to Paul Cuny and invited him to speak to the West African Full Gospel Business Mens Fellowship next year which has 5,000 people in attendance! What a divine appointment this was for Paul Cuny!
MEDICAL TEAM SEES 1,500 PATIENTSOVER 600 RECEIVE JESUS There were 11 on the medial team led by myself and Dr, Dora Soforo, a Ghanaian doctor from America whom I met years ago during the Rwanda crisis, where within 6 weeks 60,000 died! Having Dr. Soforo co-lead was a wonderful asset. She is a powerfully anointed woman who is aware of the forces of darkness that threaten Ghana. The enthusiastic participation of many Ghanaian medical students and nursing students and several Ghanaian doctors made a tremendous impact.
We were touched over and over again that most of the patients could not afford even minimal medical care. Though there was much economic poverty, many of the people in Ghana exuded spiritual vitality. The district hospital facility where we were holding the clinic was a divine provision. Some of our medication was held up in customs for two days. However, we were able to purchase meds from the hospital pharmacy for next to nothing when the pharmacist realized we were giving the medicines away.
The team was touched by a man who came to the clinic with a large mass on his face unable to afford the surgery which would cost the equivalent of $250 in our currency. Joel and Sarah Anders were touched by the Lord to donate the money for the operation! Throughout the week team members donated over $1,800 to meet specific needs of the people!
CLINIC AT TV 3 STUDIO When we arrived at the studio, 2000 people were waiting. People had started arriving at 3 to 4 A.M. Many had walked for miles, dressed in Sunday church clothes, after hearing TV 3 advertise that free medical and dental care was going to be offered. It was a very difficult situation. We could only see about 300 people! A Ghanaian pastor attempted to share the Gospel with the patients waiting in line that could not be treated.
The meeting at the university where Dr. Soforo trained was a divinely orchestrated time. I was able to challenge these 120 medical students to use their training and education to show the compassion of Jesus.
DR. WILLIAMS AND DR. SOFORA MEET GOVERNMENT MINISTERS
Dr. Saforo and I met with the Minister of Communications and with the Minister of Regional Cooperation and New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD). Both of the ministers were very enthusiastic about the telemedicine capabilities we outlined for them. The Minister of NEPAD is also the chairman of a committee for 16 West African nations that are part of ECOWAS. Telemedicine is a tremendous tool to both improve the health of individuals as well as bring the loving care of Jesus to hurting people.
Just wanted to let you know of the things the Holy Spirit did among us on this trip. Please let us hear from you.
Sincerely,
Paul and Sofia Williams
